Projects can be managed using various software tools, and in recent years, with the Internet of Things wave, there are more options than ever for using web-based tools for creating your own schedule. No matter the medium you use, there is a high likelihood that you will use one of the standard methodologies for tracking your project tasks and milestones. Let's look at some of the basic project scheduling techniques. Gantt or bar charts: this technique involves a linear calendar laid out horizontally with previous dates to the left and future dates to the right. Tasks are listed along the left column and represented by bars of time across the dates in the linear calendar to the right. Milestone chart. A milestone chart focuses on scheduled tasks which are planned to occur at specific times over the course of the project. Different from a Gantt or bar chart, this milestone chart focuses specifically on the start and completion of particularly important tasks or critical tasks, reviews, equipment delivery, approval dates, or other important events. It is a much higher-level view than other schedule types. Line of balance process. A line of balance process is implemented typically when the project contains some repetitive process within the scope. It is a control process that is used for collecting, measuring, and presenting data related to time, cost, and accomplishment of tasks, all measured against the project plan. Network diagrams. A network diagram is a graphical method of viewing tasks, their dependencies, and the critical path of your project. In network diagrams, tasks are represented by boxes called nodes. Dependencies are defined by lines that connect these boxes together. There are several network diagram types available to support the management of project scheduling. We'll focus on the most common form called the PERT or program evaluation and review technique.
