Hello, my name is Darren Mullin, and in these lessons, you will learn how to create and use your own templates and template sets. First of all, why would you consider creating a template? A template is a great way to save time and encourage consistency when there are sheets with features that can be used more than once. For example, You may have created a great project plan that can be used for all projects at your organization. Or, this example balance sheet can be used year over year or to analyze multiple companies. Looking into more detail at this balance sheet, we see that there are a lot of line items organized into hierarchies, as well as formulas, conditional formatting, and automation workflows. It would take considerable time to create this sheet each time it needs to be used. Not to mention, there is the risk of forgetting to reproduce a key feature. Creating a template from a sheet is simple. Once you have all the features including forms, workflows, formulas, and formatting that you wish to have available for reuse, you can choose Save as Template from the File menu. You will then be prompted to name the template and choose where to save it. Furthermore, you have the option to dictate how to handle the automation and formatting settings. Under the automated workflow and alert options, you can choose whether or not to include automated workflows in your template. If you include them, you can choose to include the recipient and permission settings that are set on the source sheet. You can also choose to preserve or not preserve the destination sheet for workflows that copy or move rows into other sheets. Likewise, the data and formatting options allow you to choose to include any comments that are currently in the source sheet, attachments, cell links and cross-sheet references, sheet hyperlinks, any shared filters, or forms. Once you have all the options chosen that you wish to keep, simply click Save. And navigating to the location where the template was saved, you'll see the template that was just created. Notice that Templates have a special icon to differentiate them from other types of Smartsheet items. Now you know how to create your own template from a sheet.
