(classical music) Wouldn't it be great if we could all work together as one team? I would like to give you the tools on how to build a healthy workplace culture that produces cooperative teams. We will also be going over how to cultivate a non-threatening work culture where individual differences are celebrated, employees can find common ground and flexibility is the norm. Conflict in the workplace can create difficult situations that pull people apart, breed negativity and lead to a disrupted culture. As a manager, you can handle conflict effectively using clear communication while building a communicative cohesive environment. When conflict and negativity arise, it is often because people are not communicating clearly, not listening to one another and have opposing viewpoints. For example, something as simple as one employee wanting the window shades lifted and another employee wanting the shades closed can lead to a conflict. How do you handle this when it happens? Employees that work together day after day require leadership that cultivates strong working relationships where people can disagree yet still respect each other, trust each other and solve problems as issues arise. Open dialogue, formal and informal communication, team building events and positive daily interactions are all key elements to building a healthy workplace culture. When these working relationships are unstable or simply do not exist, conflict can surface like the battle of the window shades. As the manager of these two employees, what do you do? You have been called to the situation to resolve it. Here's how. Step one, one at a time, allow each individual to share their side of the story. Give them each one or two minutes maximum and tell them to stick to explaining the situation, not attacking the other person. Step two, in as few words as possible, summarize what you just heard aloud. Step three, explain that they must come up with a solution that works for both of them. Facilitate this communication exchange. Step four, discuss the options. Step five, ask the employees to select the solution that works for both of them. Have them commit to working together to find feasible solutions going forward. You have taken a negative situation and allowed people to speak, listen, problem solve and see the situation for what it is without saying anything negative in the process. Turning a situation like this into a learning opportunity is a vital task that every manager must embrace. There may be times when conflict goes unresolved and creates a disruption in the workplace even after your intervention methods have been used. These situations may require you to create performance improvement plans, schedule coaching sessions or enlist the help of the human resources department.
