Employees should be prepared for their organizations to regularly update their company standards to address those changes. Current codes of ethics and conduct can better establish the integrity of company policies and employee conduct within the context of shifting technologies, economic drivers, environmental factors, unexpected crises, and social movements. Let's look at a recent example of how conduct in the workplace was affected by an unexpected global health crisis. When the COVID-19 pandemic emerged, every business worldwide was forced to adopt new rules of conduct to slow the spread of the virus. Both the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, OSHA, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, CDC, were instrumental in providing guidelines regarding employee conduct in the US and around the world. These guidelines included social distancing, wearing face masks, washing hands for at least 20 seconds, and having stricter cleaning and disinfection practices. This conduct became the daily norm for all employees, regardless of their workplace. Every business was not only forced to rethink their health and safety policies, but also the underlying ethics and conduct codes related to them. Equally significant, businesses and their employees were forced to completely overhaul and adjust their work models and routines, shifting to remote and hybrid work arrangements, implementing and integrating new technologies to facilitate those changes, and adjusting their broader codes of ethics and specific codes of conduct to these new operational environments. Here are some other examples of influencers that may spur changes to an organization's ethics and conduct codes, including: economic changes or market drivers, diversity and inclusion initiatives, adverse impacts on the local community, advanced technologies and digitalization, growth and expansion in international markets, evolving work models or structures, green energy programs and opportunities, information storage and security, and health and safety. In addressing any of these potential influencers, the goal should be to adjust any ethical or conduct codes to maintain and improve company culture, values, opportunities, mission, and reputation for the benefit of employees, customers, and community.
