Chapter Six: Achieving Goals with Your Team When focused on the collective goal, each member of the team focuses on achieving the team's purpose over and above their individual objectives. But as humans, it's also necessary that we honor our individual goals. When people are strategically placed on teams based upon their strengths, individual and team goals can coincide. Think about sports teams. If your individual goal is to score score 20 goals in a season, that contributes to your team's goal of winning 75 percent of its games. When your goals are aligned with the team's, it is easy to fulfill both. This allows individuals to connect to something bigger than their own personal achievement, as they are now able to see how their contributions influence team success. Collective goals can be short-term and long-term goals. The collective goal is influenced by the kind of team or its assignment. For example, a cost-functional team may come together to develop strategic goals for the next fiscal year. This is a team with a short-term goal. A focus team, on the other hand, may be together for the long-term, constantly assessing progress. (Whooshing). Let's check your understanding of collective goals. Why is it important to strategically place people on teams based upon their strengths? A, gathering a team of strong individuals leads to competition which will naturally lead to further success? Or is it B, individual strengths can help a team more efficiently achieve their collective goals? Or C, an individual without a clearly defined specialization provides no value to your team and its goals? So, which of these is the best? A, B, or C? Option A describes a scenario that does happen, but it is not the best answer as to why you want to strategically choose people based on their individual strengths. Option B: this is the best answer. It clearly explains how individuals' strengths can lead to collective success. And option C fails to acknowledge that individuals could have multiple skills that contribute to the success of the team. (Whooshing).
