Hello, my name is Constance Lanson. And in these lessons, you will learn the relevance of risk management, risk analysis identification and assessment, and risk management, mitigation, preparation, and response. Risk management is essentially relevant to the success of every organization. An organization that takes no risk cannot thrive. However, an organization that ignores risk may fail when a single threat is exploited. So when we're talking about the relevance of risk management, we're looking at, how can an organization not only reduce risk, but how can that organization plan for success? How, also, can that organization reduce any potential losses, and how can that organization help improve its reputation? When you're looking at an organization talking about reducing uncertainty, you're looking at identifying just where and what is the risk to the organization. When you're talking about successful planning, you're looking at just how severe is the current level of risk that has been identified. When you're talking about reducing expenses and losses, that organization is really looking at the current level of acceptable risk. And in the aspect of helping that organization improve its reputation, that organization now is considering, how do they bring the risk that has been identified to some acceptable level? When an organization is discussing the impact of risk, they also are talking about the type of risk that has been identified. When looking at the relevance of risk management, a risk assessment has been conducted. When talking about the type of risk, the organization also is considering the time to impact of the risk. Maybe that risk will have a short, medium, or long-term impact to the organization. And maybe that particular risk assessment resulted in an impact to the internal organization and, also, externally. When you're looking at the risk of an organization, you're also talking about the tactical type of risk that an organization may encounter and how that organization manages those type of risk. Maybe that organization is thinking about introducing a new product. And in introducing that new product, risk management has determined that that product would not only have a risk impact to the financial aspect of the organization, but, also, the risk would be an impact to the reputation, the infrastructure, and also to that organization's place in the marketplace. When you're talking about risk management, you're looking also at threat categories. Is that threat a natural threat, such as a flood, hurricane? Or is that threat a manmade threat, such as a strike? An important aspect within any organization is to identify the objectives out of risk management. Identifying the threats, listing out those vulnerabilities, thinking about those recommendations that the organization can take to basically minimize or even eliminate the risk. Thinking about those activities that are proportionate to the level of risk faced by the organization, making sure that any activities that have been planned to address the risk are properly aligned with those other organizational responsibilities. Also, taking a comprehensive look at the risk management approach to be really fully effective for the entire organization. And embedding those risk management activities within all of the organizational policies, processes, and procedures, and making those policies, processes, and procedures dynamic to a changing cultural risk management environment. What is risk management, and why is it so important? Risk management is really the controls or any actions or changes that have been put into place to reduce a weakness or potential loss to the organization. These controls are often referred to as preventive or even detective controls. Risk management is the practice of using those controls to mitigate, identify, and control risk. It also includes the policies, the processes, and procedures that are used to address risk as they are encountered within the organization. Thanks for watching.
