Hello, my name is Constance Blanson, and in these lessons, you will learn biometrics, single sign-on and remote user access and authentication. Let's get started. Biometrics is the study of physical human characteristics. Many organizations are using biometric measures of a means of authenticating their employees. They're using access control systems that deploy biometrics to identify and even authenticate the employees. They are two primary types of biometric authentication systems. Those systems can either be physical or behavioral. When a individual looks at physical biometrics, they're looking at the fingerprints, retina scans, hand geometry, and even facial recognition. When an organization is using physical biometrics, they're looking now at the individual themself. No two individuals will have the same fingerprints or even retinal scans. Fingerprints are commonly being used now to authenticate access to physical devices. However, facial recognition is also growing in popularity because of its ease of use. The number of devices that are utilizing biometric technologies for authentication is readily increasing. Many organizations are now utilizing their laptops or even serial USB ports for incorporating biometric technology into their access control systems. Many organizations also now sell or even utilize portable external fingerprint, biometric scanners in their authentication methods for their employees. When an organization is deploying biometric controls, they are attempting to authenticate access to their system. And one method of authenticating access is through discretionary access controls. When organizations deploy discretionary access control in the mechanisms used for biometric and authentications, that particular organization is now leaving the discretion of access up to the owner of the information or data or the owner of the organization. When the discretionary access control is deployed, an organization also can utilize mandatory access control. And when looking at mandatory access control for biometrics, now the organization is allowing access that has been defined by the system. When an organization is looking at deploying role-based access control, they can use a biometric control that will only authenticate and allow the user access based upon their role. And another mode of access that the organization can utilize is rule-based access control. When deploying biometric controls for authentication of rule-based access control, basically, the organization now is taking a look at the different rules determined by the system administrator.
