Communication methods continue to evolve, thanks to technological advances. To be successful, each individual must understand which methods of communication are best for each generation. Though technology impacts every business and employee, it cannot replace the human element of genuine effective communication, which requires active listening, careful attention, clarity, respect, recognition of personal biases, and a commitment to grow through interaction with people from all generations. Poor communication between generations often as the result of misunderstanding. What one person says aloud, in an email or an a text message, can be easily misunderstood. Let's use an example of a baby boomer using an ellipsis when communicating with a millennial via email. The millennial employee emailed a presentation to his baby boomer manager. The manager merely replied, "Thanks... Enjoy the weekend..." When the millennial read this type of reply, he feared his presentation was inadequate and spent six hours reviewing it to try and find what his manager had a problem with. The manager was actually just trying to be friendly in her message as her generation generally views the use of ellipses as conveying a sense of playfulness. Remember, company culture is made up of the values that each person contributes. This can include skills, differences, personalities, knowledge, work ethic, motivation, and communication styles. Each generation adds value to the workplace. As a multi-generational workforce, each generation must be flexible and open to learning new things while also accepting individual differences. Let's discuss some generational communication differences. Members of generation Z expect rapid responses from whoever they send a message to, regardless of potential factors impacting response speed. To bridge the gap with members of this generation, be timely and concise in your responses. This means that you should communicate using as few words as possible and include a big picture view of what you are saying. Using imagery will further illustrate your point. If you want to gather input from generation Zs on a new product, try text message, or use a poll that can be accessed on their smartphones, including pictures of the product or prototypes with poll results appearing in real time. Using technology this way, will spark their interest and allow them to participate in way that is comfortable for them while giving you the information you need. This generation does enjoy face to face interaction at work either in person or using virtual platforms. Embrace technology in different ways to capture their attention and truly connect with them. Millennials grew up prior to the onset of the digital age. Most are digital natives and will use texting and technology before they will pick up a phone to call someone. This generation relies primarily on written communication to exchange information with others in the workplace. Millennials generally view phone calls and voicemail messages as overly time consuming. To bridge the gap with this generation, don't overly rely on phone calls to solve problems and brainstorm, because this generation views phone calls as disruptive. They know that text messaging and emails can be read and responded to at their discretion, which maximizes their time. This generation works well independently. On their own, they will seek out viable solutions including data gathering, fact finding, and research. If possible, meet face-to-face or set up a live chat to truly connect, exchange ideas, and challenge them to use their talents to accomplish tasks and goals.
