Hello and welcome. In this chapter, we are going to take a look at hatch patterns in AutoCAD. And in this particular lesson, we're going to introduce hatches. So before we get started, I'd like for you to make sure that you have opened up the introducing hatches drawing as I have shown on my screen. And once you have that open, I'd like for you to go ahead and just follow along with me. Now, as you can see here on my screen, I have a little house that I've drawn up and it has some hatch patterns already assigned to some of the elements in the drawing. Now, hatches in AutoCAD is typically used to indicate a type of material. Looking at my example that I have here, it's indicating a wall material here with the brick. And over on this side, we're indicating a siding. And up here we're indicating a roof-type material. Hatching is also used to sometimes identify an area of a drawing for some other reasons, such as to hatch an area for a wall to be demolished or objects that are to be removed. There are many different reasons as to why you might want to use hatching. AutoCAD hatch objects, or objects that fill a space, and it's a closed space, it has to be closed so you cannot hatch an open area without boundaries to it. It has to be a closed container. Think of that as an area where you can pour water into or a liquid into. So for example, this window area here can be hatched. It it's a closed area. Hit escape here. But if I was to try and hatch this area out here in the open, I would not be able to hatch it because water would just flow and flow and flow. And that hatch object that we create will be of three different types. It can either be of a pattern, it can be of a solid color, or it can be of a gradient and we're gonna see all of those in this chapter. Also things to note is hatches that are associative and hatches that are non-associative, as I have shown here on my screen. A hatch that is associative will update when the objects that were used to create that hatch are updated. So for example, I also grab the edges of this wall here and if I was to move this grip out, notice how my hatch updated. On the non-associative hatch side, if I was to come over and adjust this wall, the hatch pattern will not update. So we're gonna explore hatches a little bit more in this chapter.
