(gentle music) In these lessons, you'll learn what self-awareness is and how it enhances your leadership abilities, as well as how it contributes to effective teamwork and collaboration. We'll also discuss how self-awareness can benefit you as a leader and in your interactions with colleagues. Let's begin by discussing what self-awareness is. Self-awareness is an individual's attention to their own feelings and state of mind, as well as how these factors influence and are influenced by interactions and relationships with others. Self-awareness contributes to improved performance, outcomes and work relationships through better understanding of how to relate to others, how to react to difficult situations, how to effectively respond and communicate as well as how to regulate your emotions and attitudes. Self-awareness is a necessary component of emotional intelligence, also known as E.I., a concept popularized by author and science journalist, Daniel Goldman. Emotional intelligence is the ability to understand and manage our emotions while also influencing and understanding the emotions of others. Having self-awareness means you have a good understanding of how you function and behave. Basically, you know what motivates you. In knowing this, you can adjust your attitudes and behaviors to get better work results. For instance, well-developed self-awareness will help you relate better to your colleagues and contribute to a positive work environment. You can analyze situations and problems objectively and in remaining objective , can solve problems and collaborate more effectively. Generally, you are better able to self manage as well as work with others more productively. Self-awareness can also boost your confidence and help you manage stressful situations. When we practice self-awareness, we also exercise empathy, which is the key characteristic for positive, healthy interactions with others. By better understanding ourselves, we can also better understand others in knowing how and why we react a certain way in situations. We can also understand why others might behave and react the way they do in similar situations. It can help us regulate how we respond to the reactions of others and help us manage conflict intention. Self-awareness coupled with empathy gives us the insights needed to adjust and adapt our own behavior in responses to others which ultimately contributes to improved personal and professional relationships. Employees who are self-aware also tend to be more satisfied at work. Organizations with satisfied employees often see higher retention and lower turnover rates. Not surprisingly, self-aware employees also contribute to higher profits and performance outcomes.
