Hello, my name is John Varon, and in these lessons, you will learn about creating a startup experience. In this lesson, I will show you about what a startup experience is and why you might want to worry about it. When we talk about startup options, we are referring to what Microsoft Access does or does not do when you first open a database file. By default, when you open a Microsoft Access database, it doesn't do anything, or more specifically, it doesn't do anything specific besides opening the database in the standard view that we're used to seeing. To look at this, I'm going to open the sample students database. Now, this sample database actually has startup options already configured in it. I've turned those off so that it will open like a default database would. As you can see, we just get the standard default database view with the navigation pane and the tab open to one of the tables. Now, if I were to load something like the Northwind sample database, exactly as it comes with Microsoft Access, you can see some startup options in action. Now, this time, you can see that Access is doing some stuff that it normally doesn't, such as opening this default form for us. There could also be other things going on. Startup options can affect the user interface, and those are the most obvious ones, but they don't have to be related to the user interface. There are also startup options that can affect things behind the scenes. So what is the point of startup options? They don't really do anything new to your database, such as adding new functionality. But what they do give you is a better user experience. Think about it this way. If you have a user that is familiar with using computers in general, but has no idea what a database is, when Microsoft Access opens in the default view, and they are shown a list of tables, queries, forms, and reports in the navigation view, their first question is probably going to be, what do I do now? Startup options exist in order to eliminate this question. They allow you to create a user experience where the user is not lost or overwhelmed at first glance. Instead, they are shown what to do, or at the very least, they are guided in the right direction. This makes startup options extremely important for your users, and by extension, for you as well. Because the first impression a user has when they open your database file may and often does make all the difference in whether they choose to continue using it or not. And if they choose not to use your database, then everything else you've done with it would be wasted. Therefore, we're going to focus on how best to make use of the startup options provided by Microsoft Access. Thanks for watching.
