Hello, in today's lesson, we'll learn about what kind of application Premier Pro is, its system requirements and general capabilities, and how to create a new project. Premier Pro is a non-linear video editing application abbreviated as NLE. Unlike editing analog film or video tape, edits and adjustments are not required to be performed in any particular order which is a linear process. Since it is a non-linear application, they can also be changed at any point in time easily. Premier Pro works using metadata to record the file path and edits in a kind of recipe or script which updates every time you make changes to the project. This metadata is stored in your project file which you can name as desired. I can open an existing project or create a new one from the Premier Pro launch screen. Let's launch Premier Pro from the applications folder under Go, Applications, Premier Pro on the Mac or from the dock on the Mac. On the PC, you can use a shortcut or navigate through the Explorer. Here you see our opening screen. New Project, Open Project. Open a Premier Rush Project which is a mobile application version of Premier. You can do team projects which allow for collaboration across the creative cloud. And there are also many, many tutorial videos available under the Learn button here. Let's create a new project. I'll click this button here. When you create a new project, a window appears that will help you name your project, set up the file storage locations, video rendering and playback, and more. The General tab lets you specify the graphics card used and the method of acceleration Premier Pro uses under the Video Rendering and Playback menu. Premier pro can take advantage of certain types of video graphics cards to speed up processing and output using what is called the Mercury Engine. A list of compatible cards and system requirements can be found online. At a minimum, Premier Pro needs at least eight gigabytes of RAM allocated to the application and 16 gigabytes for 4K video and above. It will also benefit from multi-core CPU's with fast clock speeds. The graphics card should have at least two gigabytes of memory. Fast, large-capacity hard drives are also essential for video editing. The Video pull down menu in this window defaults to time code which is what you will primarily use when editing digital video unless the source material is digitized film. In that instance, you may want to choose one of the feet and frame options or frames. You'll learn more about time code in upcoming lessons. Audio information can be displayed as audio samples or in milliseconds. Again the default is audio samples. Capture will only provide one option, HDV, and refers to extracting tape-based video from a camera or capture card directly into Premier Pro. Color management refers to how your monitor will display a range of color based on specific industry standards. The default is displayed here. Moving to the Scratch Disks tab option, this allows you to choose a hard drive storage option for many different source materials and previews. In general, these should all be set to same as project on a hard drive with plenty of free space for optimal efficiency and workflow. Ingest settings if checked allows you to copy files, transcode which changes the video file format to a more compatible type on import, create proxies which are low resolution placeholder files for high resolution clips, or you can copy and create proxies on the way in. Select the Ingest checkbox only if you need any of these options to take place as you bring media into your project. Once you click okay, Premier's interface will appear.
