Course Description

In the early 1990s, the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) set forth rules and regulations for safely working with—and cleaning up—hazardous substances and emergencies involving them. Get a rundown on what HAZWOPER is all about, and learn to define, identify, plan for, and safely respond to situations involving hazardous substances.

In these lessons, we’ll first look at how OSHA defines hazardous substances. Then we’ll go over safety and response plans and training, as well as procedures for identifying and evaluating hazardous sites. You’ll learn the role your organization’s medical health program plays in assessing your health both before and after chemical exposure. We’ll also explain how a system of controls helps limit exposure to hazards, and how emergency response plans can help to mitigate any accidental exposure or release.

What You'll Learn

  • Define and identify what hazardous substances are, based on how OSHA defines them
  • Interpret safety and response plans and training for working with hazardous substances
