Businesses run on feedback. As a manager, you’ll occasionally need to provide feedback about your employees, and you’ll need to receive feedback from senior leadership. It’s important that the feedback that’s given remains respectful, separated from the person, and offer constructive advice. Following these guidelines will help you give and receive criticism that’s helpful and treats others with dignity. Respect is also important for having discussions on topics where you have strong feelings or viewpoints to share. Managers want to be able to express themselves without coming across as overly aggressive or dismissive. Preparing for and having a difficult conversation takes a lot of work, but this process isn’t finished when the conversation ends. After having a difficult conversation where you give an employee feedback, it’s important to provide clear goals and monitor the issue so they have the chance to improve.
In our course on Making the Most of a Difficult Conversation, we’ll discuss ways to positively take criticism and provide constructive feedback to your employees. You’ll also understand the importance of being assertive and respectful when you want to express strong opinions. Learn how a difficult conversation with your employee can help give them a chance to improve and flourish in their position.
