Hello. Welcome to intermediate Visio. In this lesson, we are going to explore a way to help keep shapes organized called, layers. Now what happens in drawings as they get more complicated there may be a need to place them in different organizational layers in your drawing. Now, many of Visio's built-in templates also use layers. For example, this drawing that you see up right now in my, again, Visio area, is based on the Office layout templates. So when you go to File and New, and you again, can come into Visio's built-in templates, I've created this drawing based on the Office Layout or Cubicle template. Now, back in this template we'll see that there are different types of things. Like office equipment, for example computers and phones, also accessories like my cactus and my little plant, and also, even workers. In this case, a woman and a man. These different types of, again, objects in the drawing are placed automatically on layers by Visio. Let's take a peek at where these are organized. If you go to the Home ribbon tab and come over to the Editing group, there's a button here called, Layers. When you click on this button, you'll see that there is a Layer Properties area. This will show you the different layers that have automatically been created in this Visio drawing by basing it on the template. We'll see here that there are many different layers. There are Building Envelope layers, Computer layers, even a layer for Humans. We'll see here that each layer is basically a level for the objects to be organized in. For example, this Human layer. If I come in here to the Visible area and I uncheck it and click on OK, we'll see that both the humans in my drawing turn off because I've just turned off that layer. To bring them back, I'm gonna come back to the Layers button again, in the Editing group, go back to assign layers and re-check the layers button. And I can click on, Apply. The box will stay open and I can now see if I drag the box over that both my workers have returned to my drawing. So again, we're seeing that layers are a way to organize different types of objects in a drawing and that Microsoft Visio will actually use layers in the templates that you might base your drawings on. Stay tuned. In the next lesson we're going to explore how to utilize layers in drawings of your own in Visio.
