Hi, in this Visio course, we want to explore how to create a new blank drawing. Now, the first thing we need to do is access again a new blank drawing in Visio. So we're going to go up to the File ribbon tab and select New. This is going to take us into the backstage view and then let us select from Visio's built-in templates. Now, you'll see at the top there are three default templates. Basic diagram, blank drawing, and organizational chart. We wanna start with a blank drawing. Now, this takes us in. The next step will be to decide what the blank drawing's measurement system will be. Is it going to be based on metric units or US? Because I'm in the United States, it defaults to US units, which means of course, inches and feet. Then I'm going to click on Create. Now, my drawing will be created, which is blank, just like I asked for it. The other thing that's interesting when you create a new blank drawing is over here on the left you'll notice that the shapes pane does not have any stencils open in it. And that's because Visio is assuming you will know which stencils and stencil templates you want to have your shapes be based on. But what I can do is come here to the More Shapes area, find the shape category that I want, the stencils that I would like, and then they'll open up for me so that I can start adding shapes to my blank drawing. To do this, I'm going to click on a shape and then left-drag it into my drawing. And you'll notice that it will then allow me to release my left mouse button and drop that shape into my drawing. You'll also notice as I do this that the shapes don't have any color associated with them and that's because I'll need to add that color and formatting later on. But as I do this, I'm just left-dragging the shapes onto my blank drawing and beginning to create my diagram. Also notice up here at the top, that new drawings that have not yet been saved are called drawing, with a number after them. That's the default name for new diagrams until you save them. Stay tuned for the next lesson when we're going to look at how to create a new drawing based on one of Visio's built-in templates.
