Everyone brings a unique set of dynamics to the workplace, which comes from the culture or cultures they are a part of. Cultural components determine how we behave, what we value, and what our beliefs are. A person’s culture provides them with unique characteristics that affect who they are as individuals. Knowing how cultures and combinations of cultural characteristics can effectively interact is known as cross-cultural competence. Having cross-cultural competence means keeping an open mind and maintaining a positive attitude toward other cultures. This includes using generalizations to learn more about cultures and avoiding cultural stereotypes.
In these lessons on Cross-Cultural Competence, you will learn the basic definition of culture. Then you will learn how to understand and acknowledge that different cultures have a variety of approaches and perspectives in the workplace. You’ll discover how to become more aware of a culture’s patterns and assess and develop your cross-cultural competence.
