Welcome to Fostering a Collaborative Culture. The culture of your workplace is a big indicator of how well your team works together. If there's a culture of independence, your team may have a difficult time collaborating when necessary. Let's explore how you can help foster a culture of collaboration in your workplace. For a team to be successful and collaborative, it's best that they get along with each other in some capacity. When team members work well together, they often have solid relationships with each other. Close-knit teams are often more productive and the team members may find their work more enjoyable. When teammates get along, they may be more likely to contribute to the team discussions and feel comfortable sharing their insights or ideas. What happens when team members do not get along? These teams are often less productive and people are less likely to trust each other and share their ideas. As a result, overall team morale suffers. When a team has strong relationships among team members, there's an environment of trust, respect and inclusion, team members feel safe, valued and a sense of belonging. Let's look at some ways that you as a team member can build strong relationships with others on your team. You could start by building trust. When there's trust in a relationship, people can feel more comfortable sharing their thoughts and helping each other. They can also feel free to fully participate in the team without repercussions for their mistakes. This creates a more collaborative team environment in which all team members feel they can contribute. It can also create a greater sense of wellbeing on the team. As a team member, there are steps you can take to make people trust you. Communicate honestly. When we are honest with others, they are likely to return the favor. If there's an issue on the team, you can find ways to talk about it in a respectful but honest way so the whole team can move forward. Honor your commitments. If you tell others you're going to do something, it's best to follow through. Admit mistakes. If you were wrong about something or missed a deadline, it's best to own those mistakes and apologize. Don't make excuses or point blame. The next step to building relationships on teams is taking time to get to know your teammates. You may have worked extensively with some people on your team and know them well while there may be others with whom you don't have a prior relationship. If possible, you can ask those individuals to have coffee or set up a virtual one-on-one meeting to get to know each other better. Doing this is a first step to building a personal connection that will help you work better together. Show your appreciation of others. It's a good idea to tell others that you're grateful for the quick answer to your email or the extra work they did on the project you're working on together. People want to know that they are appreciated and showing that appreciation will strengthen the connection between you and others. The last step you can take to build relationships in your team is working on yourself. Your self-awareness can be key to team relationship building. Are there things that you say or do that might unintentionally be hurting your relationships with others? Do you tend to interrupt others in meetings? Do you only make small talk with certain team members? Is it possible that your communication style is more direct than some are comfortable with? It is important to take a good look at ourselves to understand what actions we might be doing to unintentionally harm our relationships with others. Identifying these opportunities to improve can help us grow personally and as a valued team member.
