Hello. My name is Steven Steinbach, and in these lessons, we're going to look at layers, groups, and mask in Adobe Illustrator 2023. To begin, let's go up to Workspace and go to Essentials Classic. And let's reset. Essentials classic. You can find layers here under this icon one. And it's right above the asset export. And let's move it down here. So let's open this up and let's undock it. We also don't need Asset Export, so. Just as a review, you can take. That and delete it. And let's take this and slide this down to the bottom. There you go. By default, you have one layer. All right, let's create a few objects here. So I'm just going to go to the Rectangle Tool and select a color. And maybe a stroke black. And let's just make a few shapes here. So we have this one shape here. Now, it's still selected so I can. Increase the size of the shape here. And let's create one more shape. Let's create an ellipse and. Do that. We'll constrain it by hitting the Shift. Key to make it a perfect circle. And let's change the color why it's. Still selected to maybe a blue. Okay, so let's look at layers here. I'm going to undock this and bring. This up here so you can see this better. And I'll put it back when I'm done here. Okay, so right now we have one layer. And if we click here, you can actually see that there are two shapes. So there is the Itool here, so the visibility icon. And if you click off that, you can see that's no longer there. And click on here where that is. Now, neither one is selected, but if I select it, you'll see that there. Is a color right here. And that color depends on the layer properties. For instance, if I change the layer properties here by double clicking on this, and I change this to red, press OK. And now when I select this again, actually, when I collapse this, you. Can see now that it's red here. These are arbitrary colors. And right now, if I select this. You can see that the blue shape is on top of the red shape. But if I left click and drag and bring this below. Now this is on top. This is all on this layer. So if I click here and turn. The whole thing off, you can see. That that's what's happening. Okay, so let's make a new layer, and let's create another shape. Let's do a star shape and change. The color maybe to a green color. And let's just create something like that. And again, if I want to change. The color, you have to select it first. Then you can change the color. Okay, now you can see that this star pattern is here. You could rename layers by double clicking. And you can call that star. Okay? And you can see that that's on. This layer, and these are on the other layer. Okay? So here I have two layers. And if I expand the layers, these. Are almost like sub layers where you. Can actually see these shapes. So every time you make a new. Shape, it will create a shape under the layers. Now, I can select it here, and you can see there's a little color here. And let's click on the star pattern. And change the color to maybe you. Can see that's purple now. And if you want to select an object, you can try to select it here, and you can see it's selected. You can also select it by holding the Alt key and select it here. And to move it is very simple. All you have to do is take this little square and drag it up. To the other layer. And you can see it's moved here. So now you can see that the blue ellipse is on top of the star here. And we can rename this, too. So if you click on here and. Call that green star so we can. Name those as well. So if I want to duplicate an. Object, there's two ways you can do that. You can actually select the object and. Hit the Alt and drag. And now we have two of those out. I'll delete that. Or if you have this selected here. And I do the same thing here by clicking this with the Alt key. And drag this down like so. Now we have another copy here. So you can see here that I. Have one that's here and one that's here. Okay? So we can collapse the layers here, and you can also lock the layers here. So if you lock it here now. When you try to select, nothing will happen.
