In the past, it was very difficult to share GIS projects, and it often required transmitting large data sets over a network or copying the data to a storage device. Web services now provide the opportunity to share large data sets with consumers of the data in real-time. Maps can also now be shared through web services providing consumers with accurate, up-to-date maps. Project files can also be shared with users that wish to work with the data to perform their own analysis or create their own maps. These files can be generated providing the user with the data and symbology stored in the file, which allows users to create their own maps and modify the maps and data symbology to meet their specific needs.
