In this lesson, I will show you how to understand audio formats and file types in Adobe Premiere Pro. In this brief overview, we'll cover the basics of audio formats and the different file types you may encounter while working with audio in Premiere Pro. Let's get started. Two terms to note for this lesson are lossless and lossy audio. Lossless audio is a digital format that contains all of the original audio information resulting in a file that is identical to the source. Lossy audio refers to a digital format that removes some of the audio information to reduce the file size. Let's take a look at some audio formats that you may come across as you edit in Adobe Premiere. Audio formats determine how audio data is stored and encoded. As mentioned here are some audio formats you may come across. I will play each file type, see if you can tell the difference. The first is a wave or waveform audio file format. That is a lossless audio format that provides high quality audio but produces large file sizes. It's suitable for professional use and preserves all the original data. The next format you might come across is MP3 or MPEG audio layer 3. That's a lossy audio format that compresses audio data resulting in smaller file sizes. MP3 files sacrifice some audio quality to reduce file size making them suitable for web and streaming purposes. The next file type you might come across is AAC or advanced audio coding. That's another lossy audio format widely used for encoding audio files. AAC offers better audio quality than MP3 at the same bit rate making it a popular choice for various applications including online distribution. And remember the differences are small but noticeable on the other end. The fourth type that you might come across is an AIFF which is an audio interchange file format. A lossless audio format developed by Apple. It's similar to Wave in terms of audio quality but is mainly used on Mac machines. So let's bring that one in by going to import by ending your file. But as mentioned this is the AIFF. Let's take a listen. So as mentioned the audio file types that you'll come most in contact with are Wave MP3 AAC and AIFF. In Adobe Premiere Pro you'll encounter different types of file types associated with audio. In addition to the ones mentioned before you'll also have your timeline audio clips. So when you bring across an audio clip into your timeline it becomes an audio clip. Here you can edit, trim, manipulate and move the file within your timeline. And once you are satisfied with your audio file you can go ahead and export it. When you export your final video project or audio project you can also choose to export the audio separately. You can export audio in various formats such as Wave MP3 and AAC as mentioned depending on your requirements. And so here you can see that you have different export options both in audio and video. And for this one we'll do a Wave form audio and then you can go into your settings and pick your sample rate, your channels whether you want it to be stereo or mono and your sample size.
