Excavators are powerful machines used in many construction projects, but without proper training and coordination, they can lead to serious incidents. In this Excavator Safety – Operating and Spotting for Excavators course, you’ll learn the critical practices that help operators and spotters work together to reduce risk and improve jobsite safety.
The course covers safe excavation practices, including checking for underground utilities and ensuring trench walls are properly supported. You’ll explore the unique responsibilities of operators and spotters—such as blind spot awareness, signal use, and communication methods. Special attention is given to how spotters can guide operators clearly and safely, using standard hand signals and voice communication when needed.
You’ll also review common hazards like overhead power lines, uneven terrain, and nearby workers or equipment. The course explains how to prepare a safe work area and how to maintain full control of the excavator during use. Whether you’re operating the equipment or spotting from the ground, this training will help you perform your role confidently and safely.
This training is for both excavator operators and spotters working from the ground, helping each perform their role confidently and safely.
It covers safe excavation practices, checking for underground utilities, supporting trench walls, operator and spotter responsibilities, blind spot awareness, signal use, communication methods, common hazards, and preparing and controlling a safe work area.
You will build skills in construction site safety, control communications, equipment operation, hazard identification, and observational techniques.
The course is organized into lessons covering an introduction to operating and spotting, preparing to operate an excavator, operating an excavator, being a spotter for an excavator operator, and a review.
The course teaches standard hand signals and voice communication so spotters can guide operators clearly and safely.
