Hello In today's lesson, we will examine different aspects of video compression and other export factors in Premier Pro. There are many ways to compress video and target specific deliverable options, such as broadcast, social media, augmented reality, and cinema, to name just a few. It's helpful to have a basic understanding of the ways in which video is compressed, because it will inform your decision to use a particular preset codec, or to customize it. Video is compressed on output to reduce the bandwidth and processing power required to play it back in real time without dropping frames or encountering audio sync problems, compression algorithms such as H.264 or the newer H.265 HEVC can compress the file's raw data by as much as a thousand times. The method used by these various algorithms begin with the understanding that video is actually just a series of still frames. If the codec were only compressing the still images themselves by encoding them like JPEGs to make them smaller in file size, that would be a very simple method of encoding and decoding. However, video codecs look at additional factors such as spatial and temporal redundancies between frames. In essence, video compression is applied three ways, spatial, temporal, and chroma sub-sampling. It examines from frame to frame whether the subject or other objects in the frame have moved in space, or changed over time. It also examines small differences in color and brightness, and those differences are harder for us to detect in color than in brightness. So, color may be effectively compressed as well. The overall effectiveness of the codec is dependent on the sampling bit rate. Once again, if I look in here, you'll be able to see the bit rate expressed here is variable bit rate, 1 pass, seven megabits per second. Bit rate is set by matching a codec or setting a particular codec in the export settings, which we will examine in detail in upcoming lessons. The higher the rate of sampling or examining depressing the frames, the higher the quality. However, this higher bit rate also results in a larger file, thus requiring more bandwidth and processing power to play back smoothly. The degree and character of motion is also a factor in how these codecs perform. Rapid or constant motion in your video may result in artifacting, which is blocky pixels of changing color, for example. Fire, moving water, and explosions can require higher bit rated and coding, as a result. Fortunately, many existing codecs can do a pretty decent job on most video output, and they can be customized by using the variable bit rates or multipass and coding, for example.
