Course Description

JavaScript is a coding language that builds off of both HTML and CSS to create functions that translate directly to a web browser. This Beginner JavaScript course from Instructor Joseph Barrett teaches the basics of the JavaScript language, beginning with essential syntax and statements, and shows how to use that knowledge to create variables and operators in order to form expressions. We will explore the common JavaScript object types, including strings, numbers and dates, and learn how to use them most effectively. We will also explore conditional statements and looping structures. Learn how to use those expressions to create the foundational building block of reusable code, JavaScript functions, including how to pass values to functions and handle a return value. Finally, we will tie all these language concepts together by using them on the web page, exploring the Document Object Model to write code against, and making our page dynamic with the use of event handling functions. By the end of this course, you will be able to create and run basic JavaScript functions, as well as understand how to reference and build upon individual functions.

What You'll Learn

  • Download and run JavaScript compilers using browser F12 tools and Visual Code
  • Write basic JavaScript statements, declare variables, and assign values
  • Use JavaScript object types including strings, numbers, dates, and arrays
  • Create and build upon functions using parameters, return values, and anonymous functions
  • Apply conditional statements and looping structures including if, switch, for, and while
  • Manipulate the Document Object Model and create event handling functions to make pages dynamic

Key Takeaways

  • JavaScript is a coding language that builds off of both HTML and CSS to create functions that translate directly to a web browser.
  • The course covers essential syntax and statements, then uses that knowledge to create variables and operators in order to form expressions.
  • Learners explore common JavaScript object types, including strings, numbers, and dates, along with conditional statements and looping structures.
  • Functions are presented as the foundational building block of reusable code, including how to pass values to functions and handle a return value.
  • The course ties language concepts together by exploring the Document Object Model and making pages dynamic with event handling functions.
